Get Chanting and Win!

If you are a football fan, Get On is calling on you to show off your love of the beautiful game by creating a new football chant for your club.

As ex-England footballer, World in Motion rapper and football chant judge John Barnes says, "Chants are a great way of getting behind your team and can make a real difference to players on the pitch."

So why not show off your creative skills and enter this year’s competition? The best chants will win some ‘back of the net’ prizes supplied by our partners. Once again, John will be judging this year’s competition along with football chant expert Ian McMillan:

  • The Prize: 10 x pairs of tickets to Coca-Cola Championship, League One or League Two matches in the 2009-10 season.
Enter the competition now

You can enter by writing your chant or, for the first time, you can send us a video of you and your friends performing live. Click here for instructions on how to upload your chant video.

The closing date for the competition is 30th December 2009. You can enter as many different football chants as you wish until that date – they just need to be new and created by you!

Good luck – and happy chanting!

How to Enter

This year you can enter your chant in a number of different ways:

By uploading a video…
  • Enter online at www.youtube.com
  • Enter your log-in details (you will need a You Tube account, click here to find out how to get one).
  • Click on 'Upload Video' and choose the file that you want to download.
  • Give the video a title and a short description.
  • The next step is very important - you will be asked if you want to tag your video – add in the tag "Get On Football Chants". This is an important step because when the Get On team search for entries to upload to the Get On Football Channel this step will ensure they find your entry.
  • Choose a category and make the video public, if you don't make it public we won't be able to find it.
  • Once the Get On team has reviewed the video to ensure it is appropriate, you will then receive an email from us asking for contact details to complete your competition entry.

Some Other Tips from Get On

  • Pick your tune! You may already have favourite football chants which you already know well - so think about using these tunes as the basis for your new chant. Popular tunes are 'Guantanamera', 'Quartermaster's Store' and 'Conga', although you can also get inventive using the music from pop songs
  • Think of a good topic. Some of the funniest chants are those that are topical - about a new player on your team, or in response to another team's favourite chant. How about something to inspire your team at an upcoming match? Remember to keep it clean - offensive chants just aren't funny - but that doesn't mean you can't be witty
  • Write around three to four lines on this topic - using repetition or rhymes to make it catchy. While injured recently, Fernando Torres got a real boost from hearing a new chant created by his Liverpool fans, which is sung to the tune of 'Animals Went in Two by Two':

His armband proved he was a red, Torres, Torres
You'll never walk alone it said, Torres, Torres
We got the boy from sunny Spain, he gets the ball he scores again
    Fernando Torres, Liverpool No.9
  • Test your lines by practising the chant out loud - and make any changes you need to make it sound chant-perfect!

Top Tips for Writing Football Chants

A good football chant is short, simple and memorable so it can be easily learned and sung by the crowd.

It's amazing how a new chant can travel round a football ground if the rhythm works, it makes you laugh and sounds great when sung really loud!

Here are some tips from chant expert Ian… plus what he'll be looking for in the winning chants:

  • A good chant is simple and memorable
  • Rhyme helps, repetition helps, and rhythm is essential
  • There's no point writing a complex chant because it has to be picked up instantly by thousands of people who've got their mouths full of pie! I'm looking for something that can be sung on a wet Tuesday evening during a nil-nil draw which will magically turn it into a 4-3 thriller…
  • And finally… always say the chant out loud once you've created it to check it sounds great - try testing it out at a match to see if you can get others to join in!

The Winning Chant

Football chants need to be memorable, short and rhythmic so that they can be easily learned and sung by the crowd. The best chants are the ones that get the crowd going and are performed with all of the love of the game.

Last year we received hundreds of entries. Our seven finalists won tickets from Coca Cola and the opportunity to compete in a live chant off in front of John Barnes and Ian McMillan.

The winner on the day was Terry Cockell, who received a signed England shirt and the opportunity to record their chant with John Barnes. His chant was about his team Southend United FC to the tune of The Wombles theme tune.
