Get Chanting and Win!

Thank you for your interest in our football chants competition.

The season has now closed. The judging panel, including football poet Ian McMillan and last season's competition winner Terry Cockell, will be making their final selections, and the winners will be announced soon!

Do come back to find out which chants have been selected as the nation's finest, and awarded prizes of fantastic football tickets courtesy of Coca-Cola.

And don't let this stop you creating new chants! Ian McMillan has some top tips for writing brilliant football songs below.

About the Chant Competition

There's nothing more motivating for your favourite football team than a catchy chant sung at full volume around the football ground!

That's why this season Get On assembled heavyweights from across the footballing world, including the Footall League Trust and Coca-Cola, to launch a competition to find the nation's best new football chant!

The competition is now in its second season, after Southend FC fan Terry Cockell won last year's with his chant to the tune of The Wombles theme.

However, this season's competition comes with a twist - as well as entering by post and online, fans were encouraged to film clips of their chants, and upload them to YouTube. As world Cup fever grips the country, in this season's competition fans also had the option of entering a new, special category, with a chant dedicated to England's World Cup bid.

Top footie poet Ian McMillan has enlisted former winner Terry's help to judge the entries. The winning chants will be announced soon, so watch this space!

Top Tips for Writing Football Chants

The chant competition was launched to tap into the nation's writing talents and show just how creative with language football fans can be.

A good football chant is short, simple and memorable so it can be easily learned and sung by the crowd.

It's amazing how a new chant can travel round a football ground if the rhythm works, it makes you laugh and sounds great when sung really loud!

Here are some tips from chant expert Ian… plus what he'll be looking for in the winning chants:

  • A good chant is simple and memorable
  • Rhyme helps, repetition helps, and rhythm is essential
  • There's no point writing a complex chant because it has to be picked up instantly by thousands of people who've got their mouths full of pie! I'm looking for something that can be sung on a wet Tuesday evening during a nil-nil draw which will magically turn it into a 4-3 thriller…
  • And finally… always say the chant out loud once you've created it to check it sounds great - try testing it out at a match to see if you can get others to join in!

Last Season's Winning Chant

Football chants need to be memorable, short and rhythmic so that they can be easily learned and sung by the crowd. The best chants are the ones that get the crowd going and are performed with all of the love of the game.

Last year we received hundreds of entries. Our seven finalists won tickets from Coca Cola and the opportunity to compete in a live chant off in front of John Barnes and Ian McMillan.

The winner on the day was Terry Cockell, who received a signed England shirt and the opportunity to record his chant with John Barnes. His chant was about his team Southend United FC to the tune of The Wombles theme tune.
